1. 1 These are the words which Moses spake unto all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.

   1 모세가 요르단 이쪽 광야 곧 바란과 도벨과 라반과 하세롯과 디사합 사이에 있는, 홍해 맞은편 평야에서 온 이스라엘에게 한 말들이 이러하니라.

2. 2 It is eleven days (journey) from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.

   2 (호렙에서 가데스바네아까지는 세일 산의 길을 따라 열하루 길이니라.)

3. 3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that Jehovah had given him in commandment unto them;

   3 제사십년 십일월 곧 그달 첫째 날에 모세가 주께서 이스라엘 자손을 위해 자기에게 명령으로 주신 모든 것에 따라 그들에게 말하되

4. 4 after he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.

   4 그가 헤스본에 거하던 아모리 족속의 왕 시혼을 죽이고 에드레이의 아스다롯에 거하던 바산 왕 옥을 죽인 뒤에 이것을 말하였더라.

5. 5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

   5 모세가 요르단 이쪽 모압 땅에서 이 율법을 밝히 알리기 시작하여 이르되,

6. 6 Jehovah our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mountain:

   6 주 우리 하나님께서 호렙에서 우리에게 말씀하여 이르시기를, 너희가 이 산에서 충분히 오랫동안 거하였으니

7. 7 turn you, and take your journey, and go to the hill-country of the Amorites, and unto all (the places) nigh thereunto, in the Arabah, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the sea-shore, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

   7 방향을 바꾸고 이동하여 아모리 족속의 산으로 가고 거기에 가까운 모든 곳으로 가며 평야와 산지와 골짜기와 남쪽과 해변과 가나안 족속의 땅과 레바논과 그 큰 강 곧 유프라테스 강까지 가라.

8. 8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

   8 보라, 주가 너희 조상들 곧 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세하여 그들과 그들의 뒤를 이은 그들의 씨에게 주겠다고 한 땅을 내가 너희 앞에 두었으니 들어가 그 땅을 소유하라, 하셨느니라.

9. 9 And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:

   9 ¶ 그때에 내가 너희에게 말하여 이르기를, 내가 홀로 너희를 감당할 수 없도다.

10. 10 Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

    10 주 너희 하나님께서 너희를 번성하게 하셨으므로, 보라, 너희가 이날 하늘의 별들같이 많으니

11. 11 Jehovah, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!

    11 (주 너희 조상들의 하나님께서 너희를 지금보다 천 배나 더 많게 하시며 너희에게 약속하신 것같이 너희에게 복 주시기를 원하노라!)

12. 12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?

    12 내가 어찌 홀로 너희의 성가신 일과 너희의 무거운 짐과 너희의 다투는 일을 감당할 수 있으랴?

13. 13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known, according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.

    13 너희는 너희 지파들 가운데서 지혜와 명철이 있으며 알려진 자들을 취하라. 내가 그들을 너희의 치리자들로 삼으리라, 하매

14. 14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good (for us) to do.

    14 너희가 내게 응답하여 이르기를, 당신이 말씀하신 것이 우리가 행하기에 좋으니이다, 하였느니라.

15. 15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.

    15 이에 내가 너희 지파들의 우두머리들 곧 지혜가 있으며 알려진 자들을 취해 너희의 우두머리들로 삼되 너희 지파들 가운데서 천인 대장과 백인 대장과 오십인 대장과 십인 대장과 직무 수행자로 삼고

16. 16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear (the causes) between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the sojourner that is with him.

    16 내가 그때에 너희의 재판관들에게 명하여 이르기를, 너희 형제들 사이에서 사정을 듣고 각 사람과 그의 형제 사이의 시비를 의롭게 판단하며 그와 함께하는 타국인에게도 그리하라.

17. 17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is Gods: and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I will hear it.

    17 재판은 하나님께 속한 것이므로 너희는 재판할 때 사람들을 외모로 판단하지 말고 큰 자뿐만 아니라 작은 자의 말도 들으며 사람의 얼굴을 두려워하지 말고 너희가 판단하기에 너무 어려운 사정은 내게 가져오라. 내가 그것을 들으리라, 하였으며

18. 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

    18 너희가 해야 할 모든 일을 그때에 내가 너희에게 명령하였느니라.

19. 19 And we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which ye saw, by the way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

    19 ¶ 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 명령하신 대로 우리가 호렙을 떠나서 너희가 본 저 크고 두려운 광야를 모두 지나 아모리 족속의 산길을 따라 가데스바네아에 다다랐을 때에

20. 20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the hill-country of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.

    20 내가 너희에게 이르기를, 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는 아모리 족속의 산에 너희가 다다랐도다.

21. 21 Behold, Jehovah thy God hath set the land before thee: go up, take possession, as Jehovah, the God of thy fathers, hath spoken unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.

    21 보라, 주 네 하나님께서 그 땅을 네 앞에 두셨으니 주 네 조상들의 하나님께서 네게 말씀하신 대로 올라가 그 땅을 소유하라. 두려워하지 말라. 낙담하지 말라, 하였느니라.

22. 22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities unto which we shall come.

    22 ¶ 너희 각 사람이 내게 가까이 와서 이르되, 우리가 사람들을 우리보다 먼저 보내어 그들이 우리를 위해 그 땅을 탐지하게 하고 우리가 반드시 어느 길로 올라가야 할지 또 어느 도시들로 들어가야 할지 우리에게 다시 말을 전하게 하리이다, 하기에

23. 23 And the thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe:

    23 내가 그 말을 매우 기쁘게 여겨 한 지파에서 한 사람씩 너희 중에서 열두 사람을 취하매

24. 24 and they turned and went up into the hill-country, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.

    24 그들이 방향을 바꾸어 그 산으로 올라간 뒤 에스골 골짜기로 가서 그곳을 탐지하고

25. 25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.

    25 그 땅의 열매를 손에 취해 우리에게 가지고 내려와 우리에게 다시 말을 전하며 이르되, 그 땅은 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는 좋은 땅이라, 하였느니라.

26. 26 Yet ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah your God:

    26 그럼에도 불구하고 너희가 올라가려 하지 아니하고 주 너희 하나님의 명령을 거역하며

27. 27 and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because Jehovah hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

    27 너희 장막 속에서 불평하여 이르기를, 주께서 우리를 미워하셨으므로 아모리 족속의 손에 넘겨 멸하시려고 우리를 이집트 땅에서 데리고 나오셨도다.

28. 28 Whither are we going up? our brethren have made our heart to melt, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.

    28 우리가 어디로 올라가랴? 우리 형제들이 우리를 낙심하게 하며 말하기를, 그 백성은 우리보다 크고 키가 크며 그 도시들은 크고 성벽이 하늘에 닿았으며 또한 우리가 거기서 아낙 족속의 아들들을 보았노라, 하는도다, 하기에

29. 29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

    29 그때에 내가 너희에게 이르기를, 그들을 무서워하지 말라. 두려워하지 말라.

30. 30 Jehovah your God who goeth before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

    30 너희보다 앞서가시는 주 너희 하나님께서 이집트에서 너희를 위해 너희 눈앞에서 행하신 모든 것에 따라 친히 너희를 위해 싸우시리라.

31. 31 and in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that Jehovah thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came unto this place.

    31 광야에서 네가 본 바와 같이 사람이 자기 아들을 안듯이 주 네 하나님께서 너희가 걸어간 모든 길에서 너를 안으사 마침내 너희가 이곳으로 들어오게 하셨느니라, 하였으나

32. 32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe Jehovah your God,

    32 이 일에 관해 너희가 주 너희 하나님을 믿지 아니하였도다.

33. 33 who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by day.

    33 그분께서는 길에서 너희보다 앞서가시며 너희를 위해 너희의 장막 칠 곳을 찾으시고 밤에는 불로 낮에는 구름으로 너희가 가야 할 길을 너희에게 보여 주셨느니라.

34. 34 And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,

    34 주께서 너희 말소리를 들으시고 노하사 맹세하여 이르시되,

35. 35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see the good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,

    35 분명히 이 악한 세대의 이 사람들 중에서는 내가 너희 조상들에게 주기로 맹세한 그 좋은 땅을 볼 자가 하나도 없으리라.

36. 36 save Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Jehovah.

    36 다만 여분네의 아들 갈렙은 주를 온전히 따랐으므로 그는 그 땅을 볼 것이요, 그가 밟은 땅을 내가 그와 그의 자손들에게 주리라, 하시고

37. 37 Also Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither:

    37 또한 주께서 너희로 인해 내게 분노하사 이르시되, 너도 거기에 들어가지 못하리라.

38. 38 Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage thou him; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

    38 그러나 네 앞에 서는 눈의 아들 여호수아는 거기에 들어가리니 그의 용기를 북돋으라. 그가 이스라엘이 그 땅을 상속하게 하리라.

39. 39 Moreover your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, and your children, that this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

    39 또한 탈취물이 되리라고 너희가 말한 너희의 어린것들과 그 날에 선악을 알지 못하던 너희의 자녀들은 거기에 들어가리니 내가 그 땅을 그들에게 줄 것이요, 그들이 그것을 소유하리라.

40. 40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.

    40 그러나 너희에 관한 한 너희는 방향을 바꾸고 홍해 길을 따라 이동하여 광야로 들어가라, 하셨느니라.

41. 41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah, we will go up and fight, according to all that Jehovah our God commanded us. And ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and were forward to go up into the hill-country.

    41 그때에 너희가 내게 응답하여 이르기를, 우리가 주께 죄를 지었사오니 주 우리 하나님께서 우리에게 명령하신 모든 것에 따라 우리가 올라가 싸우리이다, 하고는 너희 각 사람이 전쟁 무기를 차고 산으로 올라가려 할 때에

42. 42 And Jehovah said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

    42 주께서 내게 이르시되, 그들에게 말하라. 올라가지 말고 싸우지도 말라. 내가 너희 가운데 있지 아니하니 너희가 너희 원수들 앞에서 패할까 염려하노라, 하시기에

43. 43 So I spake unto you, and ye hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country.

    43 내가 너희에게 그렇게 말하였으나 너희가 들으려 하지 아니하고 주의 명령을 거역하여 너희 뜻대로 산으로 올라가매

44. 44 And the Amorites, that dwelt in that hill-country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even unto Hormah.

    44 그 산에 거하는 아모리 족속이 너희를 대적하려고 나와서 벌들같이 너희를 따라가며 세일에서 너희를 멸하고 호르마에 이르기까지 멸하였으므로

45. 45 And ye returned and wept before Jehovah; but Jehovah hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you.

    45 너희가 돌아와 주 앞에서 슬피 울었으나 주께서는 너희 목소리에 귀를 기울이려 하지 아니하셨고 너희에게 귀를 기울이지도 아니하셨느니라.

46. 46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode (there).

    46 이에 너희가 가데스에서 여러 날 동안 거하되 곧 너희가 거기 거한 날수대로 거하였느니라.
